Noise level may not be the first thing you think of when it comes to making sure you have the perfect farm shop working environment, but having the right sound deadening components installed could be the difference between a quieter, more controlled environment and an endless amount of echoes.
Matt, who owns a farming operation and seed dealership outside of Galesburg, IL, has heard the difference. His shop area has Morton’s acoustical steel installed on the wall and ceiling.
The acoustical steel allows sound waves to pass through to sound absorbent materials in the wall in ceiling cavities, giving building interiors the most efficient sound insulation systems in the construction industry.
“We have friends of ours who have built a shop with a competitor of Morton’s with no sound deadening steel, so they had so much echo they could hardly talk on their cell phone,” Matt said. “They’ve been very impressed with this shop when they walk in and how little echo there is.”
Morton put its acoustical steel to the test against other interior finishes such as concrete or steel. We measured sound absorption using Noise Reduction Coefficients. NRC is figured on a scale of 0 to 1, with 1 indicating that all sound is absorbed. Morton’s acoustical steel on the sidewalls and ceiling performed the best.
“We like Morton the best,” Matt said. “We saw it as a long term investment and something I’m going to walk in and out the door of for the next 50 years and wanted to make sure it was the one I was going to like the most.”
